The beginning… (Archived)

Awake, I don’t know when I woke, I just knew I was. The feeling that time had slipped away from me completely and indefinitely, like when you fall asleep watching TV and wake up an instant later feeling like you have slept for hours yet the same commercial is on and only an instant has gone by.  This wasn’t a micro nap, and it wasn’t drug induced, it couldn’t be, I mean I was a little tired but completely lucid, no feelings of the fogginess of being drugged. I couldn’t see anything, wherever I was, it was damp and dank. While cold, it wasn’t too cold, kind of like an arid fall morning car ride. As I opened my eyes I could make a few details out about the room I was in. It was maybe six-foot by four-foot with a very high ceiling, almost like a closet only taller. I saw no doors nor any sign of openings on any wall, I did however see a sliver of light protruding from the ceiling. Following that light I realized there was a ladder leading up. The table I had been slumped over seemed to move very easily when I pushed myself up. It was definitely a very sturdy large hardwood table but none the less it moved as if though it was feather light. As I stood to my feet, I felt different, awkward almost as if I didn’t remember my own body, as if I was standing for the first time. I slowly climbed the ladder to the top, following the faint glow of light as it crept through the sliver in the ceiling. Climbing the ladder I realized it was a large, round, metal hatch. I pushed the hatch a bit hard thinking to myself this is going to be very heavy judging by the thickness of the metal. Instantly the hatch door flung open and screeched a very loud metallic bending sound as if it had been breached by a small grenade. Startled that the door opened so easily, I kind of winced and ducked as if the light that now cascaded through the room I was climbing out of was going to come crashing down on me. Looking up I saw nothing but bright light and what seemed to be a sheer wall of rock going thirty to forty feet up. Disoriented from the sudden change of environment I squinted trying to get my baring. The trees behind me were lush and full of moss and leaves, so dense that the sunlight behind it was darkening the roots enough to grow moss on the entire base of the tree except for the side the sunlight could reach from the opening I was in. I climbed out of the now tattered hole and saw that I myself was on the top of a landing of a large structure, to my left a cliff that dropped thousands of feet down, to my back the trees, and straight ahead of me was the shear cliff rising above. Turning to my left I looked off the cliff and saw nothing, just a jaw dropping distance down to a bottom that was so far away I couldn’t see. “Where the hell am I?”, I said and with horror realized I was not speaking in my own voice…
